Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment used to straighten teeth or correct the way your upper and lower jaws fit together. With metal braces, brackets are placed on your teeth and connected with a wire, called an archwire. The archwire is attached to the brackets with little rubber bands, called elastic ligatures, or just “elastics.” Steady pressure is applied to the teeth by the wires, causing them to move very slowly into their new, correct position. The elastics keep the archwire in just the right place and also help move each tooth into proper position. Other types of rubber bands are sometimes used to change the bite position between the upper jaw and the lower jaw. Dr. Fernandes will design a treatment plan specifically for you to achieve proper alignment and bite. Orthodontic treatment is not simply moving your teeth into the correct position. The teeth must be moved in a very specific order.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are very similar to traditional metal braces except that the brackets placed on the teeth are clear or tooth-colored, making them less noticeable and to some, more aesthetically attractive. The archwires are also clear or tooth-colored, contributing to a more natural look while you go through the process of having your teeth straightened and your bite aligned correctly. While younger patients might want to choose metal or even brightly-colored brackets and don’t mind the extra attention braces attract, adults may choose a more subtle appearance. Orthodontic treatment is not simply moving your teeth into the correct position. Again, the teeth must be moved in a very specific order.

ClearCorrect Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are a less invasive alternative for straightening teeth than metal braces. They must be worn for at least 22 hours each day and are only removed for brief periods, mostly for eating and cleaning teeth. The clear aligning trays which are worn on both upper and lower teeth are replaced every few weeks, according to a specific, prescribed schedule. It is important to note that clear aligners are not suitable for every type of patient or orthodontic problem. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Fernandes to learn what solution would work best for you.

Sports Guards

Wearing braces doesn’t have to keep you from playing sports! Dr. Fernandes can fit you with a custom-made mouthguard to protect your teeth and your braces from injury or damage.

Bite Guards

Grinding your teeth at night can cause severe wear on your teeth as well as pain in your jaw and neck. A bite guard, which is worn when you sleep, can alleviate the problems with nighttime grinding. Some patients even report being able to sleep better!

TMJ Splints

People who suffer from TMJ disorders may experience pain in the jaw joint, muscles surrounding the jaw, ears or neck in addition to having trouble with chewing, or with the jaw locking. A special splint which fits in the mouth can be made just for you by Dr. Fernandes which will help relieve the pressure and pain caused by TMJ Syndrome or other disorders.
